by Home with Sherry Team

Ready to get out and enjoy the great outdoors, soak up the night stars and inhale fresh air? If so, then camping is the perfect option for you and your family.  Georgia’s State Parks are a great way to camp and take in the amazing views of nature. We’ve listed 5 of the best campgrounds guaranteed to serve up a memorable camping experience for your family and friends.

Bald Mountain Camping Resort, Hiawassee

Bald Mountain is meant for family camping. There are various well-maintained sites to pitch a tent and to hook up an RV with fire rings, grills, picnic tables, and cabin rentals. When it comes to recreation, this resort goes all out! Two playgrounds, a game room, outdoor volleyball, a pool, pedal boating, hiking, and fishing are just several fun activities on site.

Local area recreational activities such as boating on Lake Chatuge, trout fishing, hiking the Appalachian Trail, tubing in Helen and a visit to the Cabbage Patch Kids Babyland are a short 30-minute drive from your campsite. No one can complain about boredom at Bald Mountain!

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park, Bremen

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park is packed with kid-friendly amenities, including a mini golf course, a theater, several game rooms, arts and crafts, and organized activities with weekly themes. This campsite also has its own water theme park and a splash pool.  There is a jump pad, train rides and karaoke and live entertainment at the pavilion or recreation room.

Cabin rentals, RV hook-ups, tent sites, and RV rentals are available. If you need to stay connected while camping, most of the Jellystone Parks offer wireless internet access. Each Jellystone park has laundry facilities, bathhouses, and comfort stations. For families, the modern facilities and variety of amenities make for a pleasant stay, especially with younger children.

If you want fun off site, visit Six Flags Amusement Park and the Whitewater Park just 30 minutes away.

Yurts at Stone Mountain Park, Stone Mountain

Stone Mountain Park has yurt camping! If you are a camping newbie or someone who wants a more glamorous experience, then yurt camping may be for you. Made of wood and canvas, a yurt typically has a deck, a water spigot, a picnic table with a grill and fire ring outside. Inside, each yurt is charmingly furnished with log furniture, heat/AC, electricity, ceiling fans, large windows, and skylights for star gazing!

For those wanting less of a “glamping” experience, Stone Mountain has additional camping options: RV hook-up sites, Safari tent sites, traditional tent and pop-up sites, and RV rentals. Modern amenities of power, water, restrooms, hot showers, and laundry are all available for use.

Inside the park, keep everyone occupied with the wide variety of fun activities for all ages (horseshoes, sand volleyball, playgrounds), seasonal events, numerous trails for hiking and historical attractions. Stone Mountain’s website calendar has all the news on upcoming festivals and events.

Amicalola State Park, Dawsonville

Amicalola is an extremely popular destination for visitors. This is where the Appalachian Trail begins and is the home of a 729-foot waterfall, the third highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River.  This park has 24-wooded campsites located at the top of the hill (up to a 25% incline). These are well-maintained campsites with easy pull-in or back-in sites for vehicles and RVs. Tents must fit on the designated tent pads, and each site is equipped with power, water, picnic tables, and grill/fire ring. ADA accessible camping is available.

Within the campground area, the comfort station and laundry facilities have been renovated, and ADA accessible restrooms and showers are available for campers. With lodge suites, private cabins, primitive campsites, tented campsites, and RV campsites, you are sure to find comfortable accommodations to suit you.

Besides camping, Amicalola has some of the best outdoor activities around. Practice your tomahawk throwing skills at their outdoor range, attend a survivalist camp, go wild on the zip line, hike the many trails, participate in a GPS scavenger hunt, and try out 3-D archery! Every weekend, the Amicalola Falls Lodge hosts an animal meet and greet, Bird of Prey on Saturdays and Meet a Reptile on Sunday. Both sessions are worth attending, and kids love it!

Chattahoochee Bend State Park, Newnan

Chattahoochee Bend State Park is a wonderful destiny for those looking to escape to the natural wilderness of North Georgia. While much of the park is kept in a natural state, there are plenty of options for overnight camping. Sunny back-in and pull-through RV campsites are available as well as traditional tent camping, walk-in campsites, and riverfront platform campsites (pretty views and relaxing).

Located in a bend of the Chattahoochee River, Chattahoochee Bend is one of Georgia’s largest state parks with 2,910 acres and protects 5 miles of river frontage. The park is a haven for paddlers, campers, and anglers. A boat ramp provides water access and over 6 miles of wooded trails are open for hiking and exploration. Be sure to bring a camera!

Outdoor activities include a playground, biking, geocaching (like a treasure hunt), picnicking, canoeing, a butterfly garden, kayaking and fishing. There’s also Glow in the Dark Bowling!
